Gutter repair
A leaking corner, a sagging run or a gutter knocked loose by a falling limb. Many problems can be fixed without replacing everything.
Gutter repair covers the fixes that keep an existing system working: resealing joints, replacing hangers, correcting the slope, swapping out a damaged section or reattaching a gutter that's pulling away. A gutter company can usually tell you on one visit whether a repair will hold or whether replacement makes more sense.
What are the most common gutter repairs?
- Leaking seams and corners. Old sealant dries out and cracks. Corners and end caps can be cleaned and resealed, and miters can be replaced.
- Sagging gutters. Usually loose or widely spaced hangers, or the weight of wet debris and standing water. New hidden hangers screwed into solid wood fix most sags.
- Gutters pulling away from the house. Often a sign of rotten fascia behind the gutter. The wood has to be repaired for any fastener to hold.
- Standing water. A gutter that holds water has lost its pitch and needs to be re-hung.
- Bent or crushed sections. From ladders, limbs or storms. Short sections can sometimes be replaced, though matching old seamless gutter isn't always possible.
- Loose or disconnected downspouts. Straps and elbows come apart and dump water at the foundation.
What should I do if a storm knocked my gutters loose?
- Stay off the ladder if a gutter is hanging, especially near power lines.
- Keep people away from underneath a loose section.
- Take photos of the damage and any fallen limbs for your insurance company.
- Call. A gutter company can secure or remove a dangling section and quote the repair.
Repair or replace?
Repair makes sense when the problem is limited to a few joints, hangers or one damaged section and the rest of the system is sound. Replacement usually wins when leaks keep coming back at many seams, the gutters are rusted or cracked, the system is too small for the roof, or you're adding guards and want them on a new system.
Why do my gutters overflow when they're clean?
Common reasons are too few downspouts, a clogged downspout or underground drain, gutters that slope the wrong way, or gutters that are simply undersized for a large or steep roof section. Valleys that funnel two roof slopes into one corner are a frequent trouble spot. A splash guard at the corner, an added downspout or a larger gutter may fix it.
What affects the cost of a gutter repair?
- What's broken. Resealing a corner costs less than rebuilding a run.
- Fascia damage. Rotten wood must be replaced first.
- Height and access.
- Matching parts. Older profiles and colors may be hard to match.

Common questions
Does homeowners insurance cover gutter damage?
Sometimes, when the damage comes from a covered event like a falling tree or wind. Wear and tear usually isn't covered. Check with your insurer.
Can I just caulk a leaking gutter seam?
A gutter sealant can work as a short-term fix on a clean, dry joint. If seams keep failing, the gutter may need new end caps, miters or replacement.
